I can say with all honesty that what surprised me most about college was how expensive textbooks are. Now I understand why public schools hold onto theirs for so long; buying hundreds of copies is outrageously expensive. But since college students only need 1, we can’t take advantage of any price breaks for buying in volume. In my first semester, I bought my textbooks from the CU Bookstore because I didn’t know about anything else. This was in the 2008-2009 school year, and the Bookstore didn’t allow students to rent textbooks yet. I spent more than $1000 on books that first year, but I barely needed to crack them even when they were “required”.
